What is Targeting & Segmentation?

Targeting (on user segments) is a way to make sure only the most relevant users are getting the guide or announcement you're making. Common examples include:

  • Only targeting users who are "not new" for any new feature announcements

  • Only targeting users who are admins

  • Only targeting companies that are on the "Starter" plan

What methods does Bento support?

You can segment (we call it targeting) based on:

Any data that you pass into Bento

  • For example, directly via the Javascript snippet that is installed

  • That includes createdAt, name, and frequently info like "role" or "plan"

Any data that you pass into Bento via data platforms like Segment

  • This data has to be instrumented by your team, but if you're using Segment, we have an integration that makes passing it is very easy.

  • That often includes things like "number of tours made"

1st party data that Bento stores for you

  • For example, the choices/answers a user selected in response to a Branching question

  • If you ask them a question on their role or use case, you can use this down the line for further targeting.

How do you set this up?

Once you've passed data into Bento, you can explore the available attributes in the attributes tab.

When you're ready to launch a guide, the Targeting sub-tab in each guide will allow you to build rules that target accounts (companies) and users.

Key watch-outs:

  • You can set the relationship between the account rules to and (all) or or (any). This is also true for user-level rules.

  • If both account level rules and user level rules are set, they will have an and relationship between them.
